Every morning, a middle-aged man makes his way to a different location in the West Bengal capital of Kolkata to spend time standing on his head in a public square. What starts as a ritual becomes a daily practice in stillness: the restless body is brought to a standstill through concentration. Juxtaposed to the movement of thousands of bodies in a public space, there stands a single body at rest and in silence. Against current political tendencies of normative repression, such a silent practice of self-empowerment is a form of peaceful demonstration in public space relying on one's own body.
