LE CORBUSIER. THE ORDER OF THINGS
Zentrum Paul Klee (CH)

8.2.2025 – 22.6.2025
Curator:
Martin Walde

To coincide with its 20-year anniversary, the Zentrum Paul Klee is devoting a major exhibition to the Swiss-French artist-architect Le Corbusier (1887–1965). The exhibition focuses on the working process of the Swiss-French artist-architect, designer and urban planner, and places Le Corbusier’s three-dimensional thought centre-stage. It offers a comprehensive overview of his entire output from an artistic perspective, and includes both iconic items and groups of works that have so far remained largely unknown.
[…]
A large-format video installation by the Austrian artist Kay Walkowiak about the present state of the city of Chandigarh rounds off the presentation.

KAY WALKOWIAK. TRACES OF TIMECNA - Centre national de l’audiovisuel (LU)
18.7.2024 – 24.11.2024

Curator:
Daniela Del Fabbro

Kay Walkowiak’s evocative exhibition ‘Traces of Time’ at CNA ‘Waassertuerm+Pomhouse’ explores the intricate and multifaceted nature of time through powerful imagery and thought-provoking artworks.

The conceptual core and starting point for the exhibition is the cinematic short film “Traces of Time” (2021), which radically challenges western perceptions of time: the clocks’ hands complete their round in an hour, suggesting the possibility of a cyclical, rather than linear, notion of time and addressing the fact that our perception of time is always culturally shaped. Within the exhibition, the series “Eternal Now” (2023), “Display” (2024) and “Nowhere” (2023) expand the notion of time and space while the new filmic work “Rise and Fall” (2024) further opens up an intercultural dialogue about the concept of time in a broader sense by inviting visitors to reflect on the theme of time and temporality in alternative ways. The works “Misfits” (2024) and “The Prophecy” (2024), meanwhile, question the Western-framed narratives of (Art) History, as well as their side effects and legacy in today’s hegemonic world.
With its themes of Time, History, Art and their interconnection, as well as its “time-capsule-like” presentation, Kay Walkowiak’s work deeply resonates with the CNA, its missions and the challenges it faces as a national archive. As guardians of audiovisual heritage, we are daily confronted with the notion of time, its passing, and the aim of preserving it. Due to our function as a museum, we are also particularly interested in the issues of cultural representation, “historical canon” and their societal legitimacy as addressed by Walkowiak in the series Misfits and The Prophecy. This correlation between our activities and Walkowiak’s works is further enhanced by the artist’s use of all the different media forms – photography, film and audio –, which make up our archival collection.

For the exhibition Misfits, Walkowiak presents two bodies of work that reflect on the impossibility - of gravity, shapes, and decay - and on the ways images hold and disturb time. Misfits (2024) originates in the collection of the Musée national d’archéologie, d’histoire et d’art in Luxembourg, where Walkowiak selected ceramic artefacts and digitally reassembled them into “impossible” or “fictional” sculptures, defying gravity, materiality, and their original shapes, while also liberating them from the logic of the vitrine.

A different kind of (un)balance develops in The Call (2023), a short film that follows a sequence of characters picking up incessantly ringing telephones—lobster receivers in homage to Salvador Dalí’s most mischievous surrealist object. Shot in Bangkok, the film lingers on the glamour and turbulence of the city’s 1960s hotels, bars, shops, and pharmacies, shaped by waves of Western tourism, Cold War politics, and the shadow of the Vietnam War.

In many of his works, Kay Walkowiak explores the historically and socioculturally defined ways of dealing with form and questions its functional positioning as a projection surface for timeless utopias. The Neuer Kunstverein Wien presents Walkowiak’s film works “Drifters” (2022), “Traces of Time” (2021), and “The Muse” (2020), created over the past four years.

In his works, Austrian-based artist Kay Walkowiak put into question the fundamentals of the Western tradition and the liberal-capitalist world. In the face of the current worldwide social conflicts, resulting from global warming, pandemics, and capitalist power play, this could also be seen also as a political approach – an approach that forms the center of the exhibition project Utopia Now.

Evolving around the idea of the utopian, the works presented in the exhibition act as projection screens that invite to think about possible alternatives for the way we interact with the world and our fellow humans. They propose a shift of emphasis from individualism to consider new forms of coexistence, collaboration, and, therefore also democracy. The central work of the exhibition is the film Neon Ghost, in which one accompanies a ghost embodied by the actor and performance artist Teerawat Kage Mulvilai as he explores various dilapidated or abandoned places in Bangkok. Central institutions of capitalist society – be it department stores, airplanes, or cinemas – appear like resonances of their demise and thus their negation. By irritating the familiar, which is presented as past and decayed, the film invites us to think about an alternative future worth fighting for.

The idea of the projection "screen" that opens up an imaginary space for thinking about future concepts of the world and by that becoming a political instrument, connects all the works in the exhibition. Whether it is the work Fundamental Values, a series of protest banners, showing abstract geometric forms that can be individually charged with meaning by the viewers. Or the works Encounters and Drifters that extend the topic of future justice also to non-human life forms and therefore underlining that current utopias should also revolve around figures of thought of interconnectedness and around a relational understanding of the nature-culture constellation.

This exhibition was produced in collaboration with Phileas.

Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, revolutionized the concept of man at the beginning of the last century. His exploration of the “unconscious” became the driving force behind the European avant-garde of his time, and he shaped the culture of the 20th century like no other. For example, his idea that the way human beings feel, think and act was greatly influenced by the unconscious helped to generate the pan-European art movement Surrealism early in the last century. Among Expressionists, his psychology unleashed a search for the self. In the immediate post-war period, and inspired by Freud, artists of Informalism and Abstract Expressionism both in Europe and America tried to render the creative forces of the unconscious in the material form of painting. The exhibition will be developed in cooperation with the Sigmund Freud Museum in Vienna and will trace the reception of Freud’s theories in art from the 20th century to today: from creative processes striving to ‘materialize’ inner worlds at the start of the last century, to the existentialist approaches of the post-war period, to Concept Art in the 1980s and feminist stances in post-modernism, all of which reflect, sometimes critically, the heritage of the master of psychoanalysis in the language of art.

KAY WALKOWIAK. ETERNAL NOWTresor. Bank Austria Kunstforum, Vienna (AT)
16.02.2023 – 16.04.2023

Curator:
Bettina M. Busse (DE)

“What happened before time began? How can a line go on without end? A circle enables us to imagine that we are eternally going backwards or forwards and never at any point hit an ultimate beginning or end.” – Kay Walkowiak
In spring 2023 the artist Kay Walkowiak will be transforming the tresor in the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien into an installation reflecting the theme of time and temporality on various conceptual and media-conveyed levels: in the centre of the exhibition Eternal Now the film Traces of Time (2021) radically challenges our (Western) perception of time: running sixty minutes, the film shows sixty one-minute shots, each focusing on a clock. Filmed in sixty shops in Calcutta, Varanasi, New Delhi and Chandigarh, the film not only records the passing of an hour but also sixty places in India where these very minutes have ticked by. The clocks are each placed in a specific local setting and are surrounded by photographs, deities, adverts, etc. – resulting in individual still-life motifs. In addition to this visual level, each clock is given its own soundtrack – conversation, film soundtracks or popular Bollywood songs from the radio. In Traces of Time the clocks’ hands turn their rounds within an hour, suggesting the possibility of a cyclical concept of time and addressing the fact that our perception of time is always culturally shaped and that time must not necessarily be conceived in a line.

KAY WALKOWIAK. BE HERE NOWZeller van Almsick, Vienna (AT)
07.04.2022 – 07.05.2022

Curator:
Zeller van Almsick

In his sculptures and video works, Kay Walkowiak delves into the correlation between time and space in existential reflection, contrasting Western and Eastern perceptions. In antique Western philosophy, a man is a measure of all things (Protagoras), opposite to the non-anthropocentric Eastern philosophy view favoring man's interconnection with the environment as part of a whole. Likewise, in many non-Western traditions, the perception of time is essentially cyclical; the beginning coincides with the end in contrast to the Western linear perception of time when each moment is qualitatively different from the one before. Touching on this topic, Kay emphasizes the Buddhist notion of the present moment urging us to ‘be here now.’

The eponymous sculptures series (Be Here Now, 2022) addresses the viewer with the same message. The signs of digital navigation systems are made of different marble types. The stone can be seen as a material, in which historical periods are merged and frozen, opposing the form of the sculpture —a location mark—which points out the navigation and digitalization. Although the sculptures bear a familiar iconography, they don’t refer to a specific location anymore. They are removed from a cartographic context, referring less to a geographical location and more to moments in the here and now.

The video Drifters, 2018 is the documentation of a precisely constructed situation that combines natural settings with a minimalist intervention. The immersive video work shows a white geometric shape on a leaf moving in the wind. The white element appears incongruous as a formal antithesis in this seemingly untouched landscape while merging through the meditative-looking movement. This simultaneous and repetitive movement emphasizes Eastern philosophy's indivisibility between culture and nature. While the rectangle represents the simplest geometrical form, it also translates the concept of insubstantial emptiness.

A famous passage of the Buddhist Heart Sutra unequivocally states: "Form is emptiness, emptiness is form. Emptiness is not separate from form; form is not separate from emptiness. Whatever is form is emptiness; whatever is emptiness is form.” Thus, in the potentiality of emptiness lies the origin of all phenomena, as well as their disappearance.
